johnten through the years!

happy anniversary~ it's been 8 years since johnten (and yuta!) were announced as smrookies! i've only been following them for one of those years, but regardless, being able to witness their friendship has been one of the best gifts. i've liked other "ships" and stuff before (stares at my 2018 sope shipper era) but those were pretty reductive of idols into just their relationship with someone else. but with johnten, i'm able to appreciate both of their personalities and talent to the fullest, while also falling in love with their friendship. i could wax poetic on them for hours (and probably have if you scroll through this blog), and it's all because their relationship and story truly is something beautiful to me. they've been *the* nct ship since day one, even before they were called "nct," and it's amazing how they've stayed so close after all these years, even through separations and literally being unable to speak about one another in front of the camera. they mesh together so well, they're hilarious and sentimental, and their bond has stayed strong for so long. johnten really are the best and i truly appreciate them so much.

here's to 8 years of johnten, and to many more in the future!

about the owner!

hi, i'm jay!!
my pronouns are he/him. i'm a trans guy, queer, asian-american (filipino-japanese), and a minor. my birthday is july 31, which makes me a leo.

likes:
johnten!!
talking about kpop
reading & writing (specifically fanfiction or about kpop)
nct's "noise" music

dislikes:
negativity
"humor" at the expense of others
homework
lgbt & asian fetishization
drama

dni/dnfi:
basic criteria (don't be lgbtphobic, racist, sexist, etc.)
against neopronouns, xenogenders, nonbinary lesbians or gays
excessively negative about kpop or just in general
akgae/toxic solo stan (idrc if u solo/unit/whatever stan for nct, just don't be toxic)
army who only cares about bts, are a "btspopper,” hate multis, etc.
constantly make fun of armys or bts and don't personally stan bts
kpop "company stan"
think that being critical of your interests is "hate"
uneducated kpop stan/defends problematic actions & speaks over affected groups
content creator/internet celebrity "stan" (especially mcyt)
delusional kpop stan (ship idols seriously, think you can date an idol)
cishet and fetishize lgbt people and relationships
use "fancy" fonts
speak over lgbt or asian voices (especially on transphobia or asian fetishization) or think mocking asian culture or lgbt topics is a "joke"
aren't from a specific asian country/not immersed in a country's culture and use a name of that culture (like using a japanese name if you're not japanese, korean name if you're not korean, etc.)
use honorifics or expressions from a culture you aren't part of (such as "oppa" or "-chan," or saying "baka." even if it's "ironic," you're not as funny as you think you are.)
anti bts, the members of nct i bias, seventeen, day6 (ot4), or shinee

general stuff:
please don't use fem terms (miss, sis, girl, etc.) on me.
don't be overly-sexual/explicit around me, i am a minor.
i ult bts and nct, but i mostly talk about nct, especially johnten.
i am an ot22 nctzen/ot6 weishennie. if that bothers you then just don't interact. (i probably won't interact with you if you're explicitly ot23/ot7 unless we're already acquainted. don't even bother if you're a lumi.)
i'm critical of everyone i stan and won't stop others from being critical either. i generally prefer to interact with people who recognize what problematic things their faves have done over people who don't.
i play genshin impact and overwatch, both very infrequently due to school, but i enjoy them and have been into overwatch since it released in 2016.
let me know if you want me to use tone indicators or warnings in conversations, i have no problem using either. (i tend to use tone indicators regardless.)
let me know if i’m being insensitive or make you uncomfortable, i genuinely don't enjoy being mean/rude to people.
i don't reply to dms or accept friend requests from people i don't know.
i call idols gay/lgbt a lot. (it's always a joke.) i'll also talk about "ships" frequently, especially johnten, but i don't seriously think any ships are real.
while i am filipino and japanese, i don't speak either language and am not very immersed in either culture (my dad is fourth generation japanese and my mom immigrated here when she was two.) so don't expect me to be an expert on anything, i am asian-american after all. still, i fully claim my heritage and do my best to learn more about my culture and history.
the intersection of my identities as asian-american and lgbt is a point of both pride and pain for me, and is therefore very close to my heart. i'll often talk about both aspects of myself since they define my daily experiences, so don't be surprised if i suddenly start ranting about it.

stan list! (groups)
(+ stories of how i started stanning said groups)

my stan list <3
nct/wayv and bts are my ults!!
i also stan seventeen, and am casually into day6 and shinee.

link to bias list!

i've been stanning nct since the interlude: resonance teaser for nct 2020 released, but was kinda-sorta casually into 127 and dream before that? i knew mark and johnny and listened to their title tracks in 2018-19 but that was basically the full extent i had interest in them. i had no idea wayv existed until turn back time came out due to me being dumb and not actually starting to stan groups other than bts until 2020. but as soon as i discovered wayv, i discovered my love for nct as a whole, and started to watch their content and listen to all the units' title tracks. i fully considered myself an "nctzen" when the interlude: resonance video dropped and i realized just how excited i was for (what we hoped to be) an ot21 comeback/reuniting/whatever you'd like to call it of a group that i supposedly didn't stan. i started ulting them very shortly after that, but i consider the day that nct 2020 was first teased to be the day i truly became invested in nct as a whole. i know we don't do the whole "in this for life" thing in ncity, but they've made me feel so many things over the year (only a year!!) i've stanned them and i think i've really fallen for them, especially my ults in johnten (plus my current semi-ults yuta, mark, and yangyang <3).

bts was the group that got me into kpop and i've quite literally written essays on how much they've helped me over the three years i've stanned them, so i won't get too much into it. basically, i got into them during october of 2018, after ly: answer was released, around the time namjoon released mono, and the rest was history. i've drifted in and out of really "stanning" them ever since i started expanding my kpop horizons in 2020, but they have and always will have a special place in my heart. i like to say that bts are my first and nct will be my last; they've both seen me through tough times, with me discovering bts and their message of self-love in 2018 when i was really depressed and confused about my identity and life on the whole, and really starting to finally bloom as a person alongside my blooming interest in nct during 2020.

i became interested in seventeen because my irl friend is obsessed with them, and she (along with my pinterest, which recommended me many pictures of vernon, leading me to research about this mysteriously attractive man, who i eventually discovered was a member of seventeen) convinced me to slip into the diamond life. i mostly lend my love for svt to her, along with vernon's views on identity and stories about living as a sort of outcast in society (something that heavily resonated with me as an lgbt kid + a person who has a background different from that of many of their peers), and to the fact that joshua's an asian-american guy from la (look at my bias list and you'll begin to see that i really like idols who were raised in the west) who's got the voice of an angel. while america line were the ones who converted me into a carat, i love all thirteen of them. i'm constantly amazed at how they've built themselves from the ground up, and at how all of them are such talented performers and fun people. they always stay true to their title as the theater kids of kpop!

while i don't consider myself to be a complete stan of day6 or shinee, they've both captured my interest over time enough to say that i'm a proud myday and shawol. i started to look into day6 through their title tracks (it's true that they have no bad songs!) and then heard about jae, who was only starting to stream on twitch around that time. long story, short, i quickly became a myday/jae stan, and he did help me a lot as i was struggling with my own mental health at that time, but i've moved on after his recent "image shift" after leaving day6. i still love the rest of the (unproblematic) members.

i became interested in shinee gradually, but mostly became interested because of the entire thirteen years of storied history they have in their pockets. jonghyun's story especially intrigued me, since i'd first heard of him through an article about a kpop idol who had fully supported lgbt and women's rights in korea during a time where it wasn't nearly accepted as it is today. i looked further into who he was as a person, and found one of the most profound stories i'd seen in kpop so far. he connected so deeply with his fans, truly caring about every shawol he conversed with, and fully revealed himself in his music, writing, radio shows, and all other art forms. and of course, as the story that had piqued my interest had said, he was a fierce advocate for accepting all people, no matter who you were or who you loved. it means a lot to me as an asian trans person, since it's so rare to see people like me being accepted, nevermind in our very own communities. but jonghyun amplified the voice of a trans bisexual person in front of his audience of thousands, and made sure to uplift marginalized people in so much of what he did as an artist. of course, falling in love with jjong's story meant eventually falling in love with shinee's story, since they were as much a part of him as he was a part of shinee. taemin's standout artistry and refusal to bend in the face of a kpop industry that is so focused on trends and monetary gain today was the next shinee thing to catch my eye, and becoming a shawol was just something that happened naturally.

#personal #stanlist #nct #wayv #nct127 #nctdream #nctu #bts #bangtan #seventeen #svt #day6 #shinee #me? writing kpop anecdotes? more likely than you think! #just realized how long this is #i can write so much about kpop but can barely sit down long enough to write an essay #hmm
